The dual neck design is said to reduce negative effects during warp speed. Since warp drive in Star Trek routinely bounces between warping the curvature of spacetime to traveling through subspace, I don't pretend to know how its supposed to work. For those who think the necks are structurally unstable, each is essentially the same as a Galaxy class neck. So unless they're willing to extend their argument, critics are being a bit hypocritical.
